Togo Suspends Fishing Activities in July 2025 for Marine Ecosystem Regeneration

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

Togo has announced a temporary suspension of all fishing activities nationwide, effective July 1, 2025. This initiative aims to provide a crucial respite for marine and lagoon ecosystems, which have been weakened by overfishing and illicit practices. The suspension will last for two months for industrial trawlers and one month for artisanal fishermen.

This decision reflects Togo's commitment to restoring ecological balance, as fisheries are vital for food security and livelihoods. The national truce is inspired by the successful regeneration of aquatic populations observed at Lake Nangbéto, following similar restrictions.

The Ministry of Fisheries plans to support fishermen with training and financial aid to mitigate the economic impact. Strategic investments in aquaculture aim to diversify fish production and reduce pressure on wild stocks. This pause is a bold move to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources.
