Whale Freed from Fishing Nets Near Polish Baltic Resort

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

Sea rescuers and wildlife experts successfully freed a whale entangled in fishing nets near Miedzyzdroje, Poland, on February 26, 2025. The rescue operation, lasting about an hour, involved cutting and removing the nets, allowing the whale to swim back into the open sea. Konrad Wrzecionkowski from WWF Poland emphasized the potential danger and stress of the situation, noting the whale's considerable size compared to the rescuers' boat. Boathooks were used instead of knives to prevent injury. The whale, likely having strayed from the Atlantic Ocean through the Danish Straits, faces the challenge of returning to its natural habitat, as the Baltic Sea is unsuitable for whales.
