In April 2025, a new tree species, Garcinia kusumae, was discovered in Bamunbari, Baksa district, Assam, India. The tree is named in honor of Kusum Devi, recognizing her support for the botanist's education.
The tree is a dioecious evergreen that can grow up to 18 meters tall. It flowers from February to April, with fruit maturing between May and June.
The fruit has local cultural and medicinal value. The sun-dried pulp is used to prepare a sherbet to prevent heat stroke. It is also used in curries and as a remedy for diabetes and dysentery.
The discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of Assam. This adds to the growing botanical inventory of the region.
