A recent survey in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, India, has revealed a remarkable diversity of orchids. The survey documented 70 species belonging to 36 genera.
This discovery underscores Kaziranga's status as a significant biodiversity hotspot. The park now boasts one of the richest orchid assemblages in Northeast India.
The survey, led by orchid conservationist Mr. Khyanjeet Gogoi, included both grassland and woodland habitats. It recorded 46 epiphytic and 24 terrestrial orchid species.
An outreach program, the "Orchid and Butterfly Walk," engaged local youth in environmental education. The program featured guided safaris and talks by experts.
Assam's Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Chandra Mohan Patowary, praised the findings. He highlighted the discovery as a testament to the park's thriving biodiversity and conservation efforts.
