In the western mountains of Beijing, known as Xishan, among the familiar pine groves and oak slopes, a discovery has occurred: botanists have found four species of wild plants not previously recorded in this area. Among them is an orchid, demanding in terms of humidity and shade, whose appearance speaks more about the state of the forest than any instruments.
The small flowering orchid with pale yellow-green flowers requires strict conditions: a certain humidity under the canopy and a high degree of crown closure. Its cluster of more than thirty healthy individuals is a rarity, indicating the stabilization of forest communities. Next to it, they found a plant with whorls of four leaves, preferring damp hollows, and two other species, one of which is the wild ancestor of the cultivated bean, capable of withstanding drought and poor soils.
These finds are not accidental encounters. They are the result of a long-term inventory of flora in the Xishan area, conducted by the green construction management. Each new species in the flora list adds a stroke to the picture of restoration: the forests here are gradually regaining their former complexity and resilience. Orchids, due to their sensitivity to environmental changes, serve as ecological indicators—their appearance or range expansion signals an improvement in the quality of the forest ecosystem earlier than other organisms.
Xishan has long served as the green shield of the capital. Today, the national forest park with an area of about 6000 hectares and forest coverage of 98,5% remains a crucial ecosystem for Beijing, although urban expansion, recreational pressure, and past agricultural activities have left their marks. However, regular surveys show that conservation and restoration measures are yielding results. Plants sensitive to the slightest environmental deviations are returning or expanding their range—an objective indicator of improving ecological conditions.
It is especially noteworthy that one of the species—the wild ancestor of the cultivated bean—could be useful in breeding. Its resistance to drought and poor soils contains a genetic reserve that could help agriculture adapt to climate challenges in the future. Thus, a local find in the capital's mountains unexpectedly connects to food security issues far beyond Beijing.
Staff of the district green construction management plan to continue detailed surveys, clarify the distribution boundaries of rare plants, and strengthen educational work among forest park visitors. Simple measures—from limiting trampling to informing residents about the importance of fragile ecosystems—help preserve what has been restored.
When a plant that was not noticed before appears in a familiar forest, it is a reminder: nature responds to care not immediately and not loudly, but surely.
