Paraná has achieved a significant reduction in illegal deforestation within the Atlantic Forest, decreasing it by 73% during the Verão Maior Paraná 2024/2025 season. This accomplishment is attributed to increased monitoring and robust field operations.

The Water and Land Institute (IAT) reported that deforestation was reduced from 1,229 hectares in 2023 to 329 hectares in 2024. This reduction is a result of intensive monitoring efforts.

Environmental Enforcement and Penalties

During the Verão Maior Paraná, the IAT addressed 126 complaints, issuing 99 Environmental Violation Reports (AIA). Fines totaling R$ 1.822.420,00 were levied for various environmental crimes. Approximately 27% of these incidents involved illegal deforestation of the Atlantic Forest, resulting in R$443,500 in administrative penalties.

The IAT's efforts included deploying 60 employees to five regional offices dedicated to handling cases in the coastal region. This coordinated approach enabled more efficient prevention of environmental crimes.

Continued Vigilance

Despite the progress, continued vigilance is essential to maintain and further reduce deforestation rates. The SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation continues to play a crucial role in monitoring and advocating for the preservation of the Atlantic Forest.
