The city of Bari, Italy, inaugurated a new green area on April 30, 2025, as part of its urban greening and reforestation efforts. Located on Via Oberdan, next to the "Amedeo D'Aosta" school, the space aims to increase greenery, mitigate climate change, and combat the urban heat island effect.
The equipped green area provides a new social space for the neighborhood, featuring urban furniture, play equipment, and sports facilities. High-stem trees were planted to provide shade and air purification, with a mix of evergreen and deciduous Mediterranean species selected for their educational value and ability to enhance biodiversity, including native fruit trees.
The project incorporates sustainable elements like biodegradable mulch and an automated irrigation system. Estimates suggest the area will help remove approximately 42,000 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere over the next 20 years, significantly improving air quality and reducing the urban heat island effect.
