Ancient Tree Species Discovered in Tanzania's Undzungwa Mountains

Edited by: Anna 🎨 Krasko

A team of botanists has discovered a previously unknown tree species, Tessmannia princeps, in the remote, mountainous rainforests of Tanzania's Undzungwa Mountains. This discovery sheds new light on the biodiversity of African flora. The trees, some estimated to be up to 3,000 years old, have witnessed millennia of history and stand as living monuments.

However, the species grows incredibly slowly, adding only about one centimeter in girth every 15 years, making it critically vulnerable to even minor human interference. The area has been declared a national park, offering protection against deforestation. Scientists are now urging for increased conservation efforts to protect this ancient and fragile species, ensuring future generations can appreciate these living testaments to time.
