In the mountains of northeastern China, rangers are no longer simply patrolling trails on foot. Instead, they are deploying drones, which conduct round-the-clock wildlife monitoring and simultaneously help to “lure tigers back to the mountains.” This phrase, from an official CCTV report, sounds almost poetic, but it underpins a very practical effort to restore tiger populations.
According to the video report, drones enable several levels of monitoring to be covered at once, ranging from counting hoofed animals to tracking the movements of large predators. Previously, such observations necessitated week-long expeditions and often remained incomplete. Now, a single operator can gather a comprehensive picture in just a few hours, a task that once took months.
The impact is particularly noticeable in areas where tigers had almost vanished. Drones not only record rare tracks but also assist in planning their “attraction”—this includes placing lures, setting up feeding grounds, and even temporarily restricting human access to critical corridors.
