Kızılırmak Delta: A Haven for Migratory Birds and Diverse Wildlife

Edited by: Olga N

The Kızılırmak Delta in Samsun, Türkiye, a UNESCO Tentative Heritage site, is a vital stop for migratory birds. Hundreds of species rely on this Black Sea region delta each year.

The Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary boasts rich wetlands, supporting 365 identified bird species. This makes it a crucial location for avian biodiversity.

Kadir Yılmaz of the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, notes the sanctuary spans 56,000 hectares. It encompasses parts of Bafra, 19 Mayıs, and Alaçam districts.

Yılmaz highlights that the delta hosts 365 of Türkiye's approximately 500 bird species. 200 species visit in spring and autumn, with 165 breeding resident species.

The delta is especially crucial in winter, providing refuge as northern lakes freeze. Birds crossing the Black Sea rest and regain energy here before continuing their migration.

Trees near the sea offer constant resting areas, often appearing white due to bird droppings. Common species include herons, hawks, and wood pigeons, with occasional sightings of large forest eagles.

Summer visitors include reed warblers, storks, and pelicans. Winter brings swans, geese, and various duck species, with rare flamingo sightings.

The delta also supports wild horses, cattle, buffalo, rabbits, and otters. This diverse ecosystem makes it a significant natural area.
