A rare Roan antelope was rescued from poachers near Sumu Wildlife Park in Bauchi State, Nigeria, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local rangers, hunters, and community members. The Roan antelope, scientifically known as *Hippotragus equinus*, is vulnerable due to its habitat preferences and non-migratory nature.
The rescue occurred after the antelope strayed from the Lame Burra Game Reserve. Upon notification, Sumu Wildlife Park General Manager Naziru Zakari instructed rangers to identify and safeguard the animal. Local hunters, initially tempted to kill the antelope, were convinced to support the rescue.
The successful operation highlights the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation. The antelope was safely returned to Sumu Wildlife Park, where all wildlife is protected under Bauchi State law.
Future plans include partnerships with the West African Conservation Network and Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in China to enhance wildlife protection and promote community-based conservation projects using Juncao technology. This technology will aid in cultivating grasses for wildlife feed and combating erosion in the region.
