A global survey commissioned by Mars and Calm reveals that 65% of pet owners prefer spending time with their pets over partners, family, or friends when stressed. The survey included 30,000 respondents.
The research highlights the unique companionship pets offer: non-judgmental, wordless, and constant support. 59% of participants feel accompanied by their pets without needing to talk, while 24% value expressing concerns to their pets without expecting a response.
For 90% of pet owners, simply being near their animal creates an immediate sense of calm. This connection acts as an emotional anchor during moments of anxiety or tension. Contact with pets can increase levels of oxytocin, a hormone related to well-being and attachment.
Pets also promote positive mental health habits. 79% of respondents said their pet reminds them to take breaks from work or screens, and 77% said their animal motivates them to step away from electronic devices.
Dr. Tammie King from the Waltham Institute of Science in Animal Care explains that reframing daily interruptions from pets as loving reminders to breathe can be a powerful tool. Mars and Calm have launched a partnership to highlight how pets can strengthen mental health, including content inspired by pets to help users relax and recharge.
