How the proof of an old conjecture turns information into new capital

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In a world where data has become the main currency, an abstract mathematical conjecture suddenly acquires a quite concrete price. Two Vietnamese mathematicians — Vu Khac Ky and Tuan Tran — proved the Courtade–Kumar conjecture, which had remained unsolved since 2013. Their work shows how perseverance in solving fundamental problems directly affects the value of information in the digital economy.

The conjecture concerns a simple but key question: when data is distorted by noise during transmission, how can the maximum of useful information be preserved. The answer turned out to be unexpectedly concise — it is enough to preserve one original bit. Behind this simplicity lies a complex structure connected with entropy and mutual information. In an era when companies spend billions on data processing, such an understanding turns abstract theory into a tool for creating real wealth.

Ky, a lecturer at FPT University, and Tran, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, published a 36-page article on arXiv in September 2026. In parallel, an independent team from Google and several universities presented its own proof running to more than 250 pages. Both groups arrived at the same result by different paths, which emphasizes that in the information economy value is born not only from competition but also from cooperation.

Ky's story illustrates how personal persistence turns into capital. He first encountered the conjecture about ten years ago during a postdoc in Hong Kong. Several times he set the task aside, returning to it in 2025, using the tools of information geometry and machine learning. Artificial intelligence helped him quickly discard unsuccessful approaches. "The main factor is the ability to continue after many failures," the mathematician noted. This trait is valued today above many assets: it allows individuals and countries to seize leadership in industries where data decides everything.

Information here acts like water in an arid region: without proper management it is lost, with proper management it irrigates entire industries. The proof of the conjecture opens new paths in the analysis of Boolean functions and information theory, which directly affects the efficiency of algorithms in finance, medicine and artificial intelligence. Companies that are the first to apply these insights will gain a competitive advantage measured in billions.

The fact that both proofs came almost simultaneously from Asia speaks of a shift in the global distribution of intellectual capital. Vietnam and China are investing in fundamental science, and this is beginning to pay dividends. For the ordinary person the lesson is simple: investing time in a deep understanding of complex systems is one of the most reliable ways to multiply one's personal "information wealth."

A scientific breakthrough of this level is a reminder: true value is often hidden in problems that seem too far removed from everyday financial decisions.
