IRS Tool Tracks 2025 Tax Refund Status for Millions of Americans

The IRS's "Where's My Refund" tool remains available for taxpayers awaiting their 2025 tax refunds. To use the tool, individuals need their Social Security or Individual Taxpayer ID Number (ITIN), filing status, and the exact refund amount from their 2024 tax return. After submitting this information, the tool provides daily updates on the return's status, including when it was received, accepted, and when the refund was sent. Status updates are available approximately 24 hours after e-filing, three to four days for prior year e-filed returns, and up to four weeks for paper returns. Direct deposit refunds should arrive within five days of being sent, while paper checks may take several weeks. The IRS states that most refunds are issued within 21 calendar days of acceptance. As of March 20, approximately 70 million returns were filed, with 69 million already processed. The tool also alerts users to any issues with their return and provides guidance on how to resolve them.
