Briton recovers $5 million in bitcoin after 12 years of oblivion

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

The money seemed to have disappeared forever: in 2014, a Briton named Chris lost access to his bitcoin wallet on the early exchange Intersango, which went bankrupt. At the time, his investment was worth about £4000, and he had already resigned himself to the loss. Twelve years later, in May 2026, the same 61 bitcoin returned to him — and are now valued at £3,3 million, or about $5 million.

The story began in 2011, when Chris, on a friend's advice, invested £1500 in bitcoin through one of the first British platforms. The platform was not regulated by the FCA, and when it collapsed, there was almost no chance of recovery. Chris tried several times to contact the former owners, but without success. Meanwhile, the price of bitcoin was soaring, and he watched the rise from the sidelines — "like a punch in the gut," as he put it.

The turning point came when his wife persuaded him to contact specialists in crypto asset recovery — the firm CEL Solicitors. The lawyers gathered old documents, proved ownership, and with the help of blockchain analysis traced the coins to a wallet linked to the bankrupt exchange. After several months of work and negotiations, including court proceedings in the US, 61 bitcoin were returned to the owner.

This case shows how important persistence and accurate records are, even in a world where assets seem ephemeral. The blockchain, which many consider anonymous, actually allows the history of transactions to be traced if there is evidence of original ownership. For thousands of other Intersango clients, Chris's story may be a signal: not all is lost if there is will and professional help.

Chris plans to spend part of the sum on a larger house for his family, including to better care for his mother-in-law with a disability, and leave the rest in bitcoin. He remains cautious — he fears hackers and scammers who may now target him. His experience reminds us: digital assets require not only faith in growth, but also care for proof of ownership.

In a world where investments are often forgotten or written off, Chris's story underscores the value of a second chance. Even after decades of oblivion, persistence and the right tools can bring back what seemed lost forever.
