CFTC Faces Republican Shift as Goldsmith Romero Steps Down After Quintenz Confirmation

Edited by: Elena Weismann

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is poised for a significant shift as Democratic Commissioner Christy Goldsmith Romero announced her departure following the expected confirmation of Brian Quintenz, President Trump's nominee, as reported on Wednesday. Goldsmith Romero, who warned of "contagion risk" in crypto markets during her tenure, will leave Commissioner Kristin Johnson as the sole Democrat. This shift occurs as the CFTC is expected to play a leading role in crypto regulation. Quintenz, a former Republican commissioner, was tapped to chair the CFTC earlier this month. Upon his confirmation, the agency will be led by three Republicans: Quintenz, Summer Mersinger, and Caroline Pham.
