Bhutan's Crypto Tourism Initiative Flourishes

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

In May 2025, Bhutan launched a national cryptocurrency payment system for tourism, partnering with Binance Pay and DK Bank. This initiative allows tourists to pay for services using over 100 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB), and USD Coin (USDC).

The system uses QR codes for instant transactions, settling payments in Bhutanese ngultrum (BTN) via DK Bank. Over 100 local merchants have adopted this method, including businesses in remote areas.

Bhutan has been mining Bitcoin since 2019 and, as of early 2025, holds over 12,000 BTC through Druk Holding and Investments (DHI). As of June 30, 2025, the crypto tourism payment system is still operating successfully.
