A recent study by the MIT Media Lab suggests that using AI tools like ChatGPT could reduce users' critical thinking abilities.
The research involved 54 participants aged 18-39, divided into three groups: one using ChatGPT, one using Google Search, and one without any tools. They were tasked with writing essays on philanthropy while their brain activity was monitored using EEG.
Results indicated that ChatGPT users showed lower brain engagement and poorer performance in executive control, memory, and creativity. Their essays were often similar and less original. Over time, these users relied more on copy-pasting, showing decreased engagement.
In contrast, the group writing without tools showed higher brain connectivity and reported greater satisfaction with their essays. The study highlights the importance of mindful AI use in education and work. Over-reliance on AI tools may hinder natural learning and weaken critical thinking skills.
Another study also linked increased AI tool use with decreased critical thinking abilities. Educators and professionals should emphasize developing critical thinking and metacognition skills to counter dependence on AI tools.
