Bill Gates met with Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on May 7, 2025, to discuss potential collaborations in nuclear energy and public health. Gates affirmed that nuclear energy could offer affordable electricity for developing nations while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
During the meeting, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Prabowo's brother and advisor, inquired about nuclear energy, noting Indonesia's progress toward establishing nuclear power plants. Gates responded that his aim in developing nuclear reactors with South Korean firms is to ensure safety and reduce costs. TerraPower, Gates' company, intends to build 20 nuclear reactors, potentially with Hyundai and SK Group, with the first reactor slated for operation by 2030.
Gates also addressed public health, stating the Gates Foundation plans to introduce new anemia medication and tuberculosis vaccines in Indonesia. Officials also explored collaboration between Gates and Danantara, Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund.
