Tesla Inc. is expanding its testing of a ride-share app to employees in Austin, Texas, aiming for a June 2025 launch of an autonomous version of the service. The EV maker recently shared a video on X showcasing a person hailing a Tesla using their phone.

CEO Elon Musk commented, "Getting ready for unsupervised self-driving." This Austin move, along with previous efforts in the Bay Area, is part of testing to develop and validate features including the app, driver-assistance software, and vehicle allocation. Tesla reported on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, that it has completed over 1,500 trips and 15,000 miles of driving as part of this testing.

Tesla plans to launch a driverless version under remote supervision this summer, named Robotaxi. It will begin in Austin with 10 to 20 Model Y vehicles, with plans to expand to other cities and vehicle models. While the service is being tested, a safety driver is present to intervene as needed. The company aims to use a mobile app similar to Uber or Lyft to allow customers to request rides.
