China Suspends US LNG Imports Amid Trade War; Musk Urges Trump to End Tariffs

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

China has halted imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the U.S. for 60 days, marking the longest pause in five years due to escalating trade tensions between Beijing and Washington. Reports indicate that no U.S. shipments are currently en route to China. This suspension follows Beijing's imposition of a 15% tariff on U.S. LNG shipments in February 2025, a retaliatory measure against American levies. Analysts at Rystad Energy predict a complete cessation of LNG trade between China and the U.S. for the remainder of 2025, with potential tariff increases up to 49% as a counterstrike against further tariffs. Chinese companies are reportedly reselling U.S. LNG to European and Asian markets due to mild winter and robust inventories. Amid these trade disputes, Elon Musk has reportedly appealed to Donald Trump to eliminate new tariffs, warning against rising costs for consumers and businesses. Musk has long been an opponent of tariffs and has been a proponent of a zero-tariff situation between the U.S. and Europe.
