GOP Senators Challenge Trump's Tariff Authority; Musk's Plea Fails Amid Trade Tensions

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

Several Republican senators, including Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Mitch McConnell, have joined Democrats in seeking to curb President Trump's power to impose tariffs. They are supporting the Trade Review Act of 2025, which would require congressional approval for new tariffs and mandate the President to provide an economic analysis of their impact within 48 hours of imposition. Congress would then have 60 days to approve the tariffs. The White House has threatened to veto the bill. Meanwhile, Elon Musk reportedly appealed to President Trump to reverse the tariff impositions, but his efforts were unsuccessful. Trump has threatened new tariffs on China, exacerbating trade tensions. Musk has publicly advocated for a zero-tariff free trade zone between the U.S. and Europe, speaking at a congress of Italy's right-wing League Party. He has also criticized White House trade advisor Peter Navarro, a key architect of the tariff plans. Musk's Tesla has faced declining sales and stock values, adding pressure amid the ongoing trade disputes.
