Tesla Seeks Approval for Robotaxi Service; Musk Aims for Austin Launch This Summer

Tesla has applied for a Transportation Charter Party permit in California, a crucial step towards launching its robotaxi service. CEO Elon Musk aims to initiate tests of the Tesla Cybercab in Austin, Texas, this summer, with plans to expand to California later. The company needs to demonstrate the safety and reliability of its autonomous vehicles, initially requiring drivers to monitor the system. While Texas has fewer regulatory hurdles for autonomous vehicles, operating in California involves a phased approval process, starting with driver-supervised tests and progressing to driverless operation without charging passengers, before finally allowing paid rides. Tesla is also awaiting approval in California for its Full Self Driving system without supervision.
