A helmet worn by Ayrton Senna during the 1992 Formula 1 season has been sold at auction for a record-breaking £720,000 (approximately $960,000). The sale, conducted by RM Sotheby's, highlights the enduring legacy of the legendary Brazilian driver.
The helmet, designed by Shoei and featuring the iconic yellow, blue, and green colors of the Brazilian flag, was purchased by an undisclosed buyer. This price surpasses the previous record set by Charles Leclerc's 2023 Monaco GP helmet, which was sold for £262,700 in a charity auction.
The 1992 season holds particular significance for Senna. During practice at Spa-Francorchamps, Senna famously stopped on track to assist Erik Comas after a heavy crash. He cut off Comas' engine, preventing a potential fire and is credited with saving the driver's life.
The auction coincides with the 31st anniversary of Senna's death at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. His tragic passing led to significant improvements in Formula 1 safety standards.
