thailand Island Closures: Similan, Surin, and Maya Bay Seek Recovery

Edited by: Ainet

Thailand has announced the temporary closure of several popular island destinations to allow for ecological recovery. The Similan and Surin Islands, beloved for their pristine beauty, will be closed to visitors until October 14th. This annual measure aims to preserve the marine ecosystem and mitigate the impact of tourism.

The closure also protects tourists during the monsoon season, when rough seas can pose a danger. According to a Facebook statement, the move will help nature recover and prevent damage from adverse weather conditions. Both island groups are popular with day-trippers and divers, accessible from Phuket and Khao Lak.

Upon reopening, visitors to six marine national parks, including the Phi Phi Islands, will need to purchase electronic tickets. Passport numbers will be required for the e-tickets. The exact costs are yet to be determined.

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh, famous from the film "The Beach," will also close for two months, from August to the end of September. This closure aims to allow the fragile ecosystem of the bay to recover from tourist impact. The iconic white sand beach, framed by dramatic cliffs, became a global sensation after the movie's release.
