The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is reminding travelers at Chicago airports that the REAL ID requirement for those over 18 will be enforced starting May 7, 2025. Travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, to board a plane or enter certain federal buildings.
TSA PreCheck members are also subject to this requirement. According to Jim Spriggs, TSA Federal Security Director for Illinois, a star in the upper right-hand corner of an ID indicates REAL ID compliance. Other acceptable forms of identification include U.S. Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler cards, such as Global Entry.
What to Expect
Passengers without a REAL ID or another acceptable document can anticipate delays, additional screenings, and the potential for missing their flights. The Chicago Department of Aviation is providing extra customer service personnel to assist travelers as the new requirements take effect.
If you've applied for your REAL ID but haven't received it yet, bring your paper receipt to the airport, though you may still experience delays or additional screening. While authorities are encouraging compliance, full enforcement may not happen until May 2027.
