Los Altos Airport in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, is on track to become an international airport by December 15, 2026, according to the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC). This initiative, underway since February 2025, aims to boost both commercial and corporate tourism by establishing direct flights to key destinations like Mexico and El Salvador.

The project includes upgrades such as a remote control tower, a fire engine for aeronautical firefighters, and improved communication systems. While the runway's current size may limit larger aircraft, airlines from Mexico and Central America have already expressed interest. The international certification, expected by December 2027, will further enhance the airport's appeal to international carriers by ensuring compliance with global safety standards.

The transformation is a collaborative effort involving various governmental bodies and civil society members, highlighting the region's commitment to improving connectivity and fostering economic growth through enhanced air travel infrastructure.
