Saudi Arabia: Shura Island and Grand Hyatt The Red Sea

The opening of Grand Hyatt The Red Sea on Shura Island on 31 October 2026 marked another step by Red Sea Global in developing a large-scale project on the northwestern coast of Saudi Arabia. The resort, with 430 rooms, suites and villas, as well as more than 2400 square metres of event space, including a ballroom of 1390 square metres, is positioned as the largest venue for conferences and celebrations within The Red Sea destination.

The project fits into the Vision 2030 strategy, in which tourism is meant to diversify an economy dependent on oil. Shura Island, connected to the mainland and the airport, already welcomes guests at 12 luxury hotels. The new Hyatt complements the marina infrastructure with 159 berths for yachts of up to 125 metres, a retail area and the Shura Links golf course, strengthening its appeal for the MICE segment and family holidays.

Red Sea Global emphasises a regenerative approach: low-rise development according to the Coral Bloom plan preserves the landscape, mangrove thickets and biodiversity, while energy comes from solar panels. However, large-scale construction on a previously sparsely populated coast raises the question of the real balance between economic growth and the preservation of the natural environment amid global warming and growing demand for exclusive destinations.

A quote from CEO John Pagano points to the goal of attracting both leisure and business travellers, strengthening the kingdom's status as a hub for international events. Nine restaurants, the Ethereal spa, Camp Hyatt and zones for teenagers complement an offering aimed at different audiences.

In the context of global tourism, where overtourism threatens many popular places, the Saudi experiment on the Red Sea looks like an attempt to create a controlled, premium alternative. Success will depend on the extent to which regenerative promises are put into practice rather than remaining a marketing slogan.
