Lactose Intolerance Linked to Nightmares: Study Reveals Dietary Connection

Edited by: Liliya Shabalina

A 2025 study published in *Frontiers in Psychology* indicates a strong correlation between lactose intolerance and the frequency of nightmares. The research proposes that gastrointestinal discomfort from lactose intolerance can disrupt sleep, leading to more vivid and disturbing dreams.

The study surveyed over a thousand students, revealing that women were more likely to experience nightmares and food sensitivities. Around 40% of participants believed that food affected their sleep. Dairy products, specifically, were linked to more bizarre or unsettling dreams.

Researchers suggest that dairy-induced gastrointestinal symptoms may be a factor in causing nightmares. The findings emphasize the potential of dietary adjustments to improve sleep quality for individuals with food sensitivities. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms.
