Why Do Cats Present Their Rear Ends? It's a Compliment! - Updated for 2025

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Cats exhibit many unique behaviors, some of which can seem puzzling to their human companions. One such behavior is the act of presenting their rear ends. According to feline behaviorists, this is often a sign of affection and trust.

Clinical feline behaviorist Amanda Campion explained on May 19, 2025, that a raised tail and exposed rear is a friendly greeting in cat social language. Showing their rear is a sign of social bonding and trust, as it's a vulnerable area for cats. Cats also greet each other by sniffing that area, similar to how dogs greet one another.

While this behavior is normal for cats, humans don't have to reciprocate. If you're uncomfortable with your cat presenting their rear, gently move them aside. It's a compliment, but you're not obligated to participate in the greeting ritual!
