On the morning of September 2, 2026, an employee of Peterson Health medical center in Kerrville, Texas, heard a faint cry from under the hood of her SUV. Colleague Connie Martinez immediately called for help, and the team began to act.
The car had just covered about 76 miles from Rocksprings to Kerrville. The newborn kitten had somehow climbed into the engine compartment back in Rocksprings and endured the entire journey without serious injury.
Hospital workers, animal control officer James Lee, and volunteers from Kerrville Pets Alive! removed the front grille to reach the tiny passenger. The kitten was extracted and immediately placed in the care of rescuers.
Kerrville Pets Alive! placed the little one with a nursing foster cat. "After one very unexpected journey, this little one is now safe, warm, cozy with us, and has a full belly," volunteers wrote on social media.
The news quickly spread: in the comments, people called the kitten "precious cargo," thanked the rescuers, and asked about adoption. "Everyone who helped save this kitten is a hero," one reader wrote.
