The number of registered pets in Madrid has surpassed half a million. There's good news for dogs! Dog abandonment decreased by 3% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 3,693 cases reported.
The Veterinary College of Madrid highlights that animal abandonment isn't seasonal, except for a slight increase in cat intake at shelters during spring due to street litters. The Community of Madrid has also implemented a QR code identification system for pets.
This allows anyone finding a lost dog to easily access the owner's information. Adoptions of pets in Madrid increased by 8.8% in 2024, with a total of 6,761 adoptions. This includes 3,091 dogs and 3,670 cats.
Despite these positive developments, continued efforts are needed to promote responsible pet ownership. This includes raising awareness and strengthening identification and adoption measures to further reduce abandonment rates.
