Romanian Education Minister Proposes National Evaluation Reform

Edited by: Olga N

Romanian Education Minister Daniel David advocates for a more comprehensive National Evaluation for eighth-grade students. He argues that the current focus on only two subjects, Romanian Language and Literature and Mathematics, is insufficient. David believes the evaluation should reflect the eight key competencies promoted in the curriculum. David suggests evaluating all key competencies to gain standardized insights into student assimilation and school performance. He also considers allowing high schools to administer their own entrance exams for up to 50% of available places. This would supplement the National Evaluation and potentially offer a fairer chance to students who may have underperformed on a single test day. Furthermore, the minister proposes decentralizing the evaluation process. This would allow high schools to assign different weights to subjects based on their specializations. David views the current eighth-grade exam as unnatural within a compulsory education system extending to high school, suggesting it unfairly determines a child's future trajectory based on limited subjects.
