Gabon Embraces Digital Education Reform

Edited by: Татьяна Громова

In an evolving digital landscape, African countries are modernizing their educational systems. The integration of digital technologies has become crucial for addressing current pedagogical challenges and ensuring more inclusive and accessible education.

Gabon has initiated a draft ordinance to regulate the digitization of education. This decision was made during the Council of Ministers on January 5, presided over by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. It marks a decisive step in transforming the national educational system, aiming to incorporate digital technologies and educational platforms into teaching and learning methods.

The ordinance aims to strengthen the legal and regulatory framework for transforming teaching and learning methods through digital technology integration. This reform has become urgent, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for alternatives to in-person education.

This initiative is part of Gabon's broader efforts to modernize its educational system. In December, a multi-ministerial partnership was launched to connect schools to the Internet, demonstrating the government's commitment to democratizing access to digital tools. The pandemic also revealed weaknesses in traditional educational methods, underscoring the urgency for reform to ensure continuity of learning during crises.

The anticipated outcomes of this decision are numerous: improved resilience of the educational system during crises, reduced inequalities between urban and rural areas, and modernization of pedagogical practices. This reform is also expected to contribute to the development of a skilled workforce, ready to support the country's economic transformation.
