Flat design in 2026: from minimalism to disappearing and immersive interfaces

Edited by: Irena II

In 2026, interfaces that until recently seemed the height of elegance — clean, flat, almost invisible — suddenly began to feel empty and lifeless. Designers and companies are turning in opposite directions: either the interface disappears entirely, giving way to AI agents, or, on the contrary, it gains weight, texture, and depth, like a physical object.

According to trend analysis, flat minimalism, which dominated for a decade, is losing ground. It is called the "most inconspicuous" direction, unable to satisfy the demands for immersiveness or seamless interaction. Instead, the market is moving toward two poles: "disappearing" interfaces, where AI performs tasks and UI appears only as needed, and "materialized" ones — with liquid glass, tactile textures, and 3D elements.

Apple is already actively implementing liquid glass — dynamic gradients, refractions, and fluid depth that give elements liveliness. In parallel, interest in materials is growing: glass is mixed with metal, fabric, paper, even sand and liquids. Scrolling turns into a narrative: parallax, animations, and scenes that unfold as you move your finger create a sense of presence.

Behind this is not just a change of fashion. In an era of attention deficit, the interface either hides so as not to interfere, or becomes so attractive that it retains the user. Generation Z, according to Pinterest, is drawn to warm, authentic, and optimistic design, rejecting sterile standardization. AI tools, on the contrary, increase the demand for a "human touch" — textures, imperfections, and emotional depth that an algorithm cannot reproduce.

Imagine an ordinary button: it used to be a flat rectangle, now it can reflect light, slightly yield under the cursor, or even "breathe" in response to movement. This is not decoration, but a way to return to the digital world a sense of reality and tactile feedback that is so lacking in the flat space of the screen.

In the end, 2026 shows that interface design is no longer just a visual shell. It becomes either an invisible assistant or a full-fledged sensory experience — and in both cases it solves one task: to return to a person the feeling of presence in the digital world.
