While some artists create masterpieces from marble and bronze, in India they decided that true art should be not only beautiful, but also a little… edible!
The famous Indian master of sand sculptures Sudarshan Patnaik created an unusual image of the goddess Durga on the beach in Puri, using sand, vegetables and fruit.
The scale is impressive: the sculpture is about three metrestall, with eight tonnes of sand, 22 types of vegetables and 10 types of fruit!
Carrots, bananas, cucumbers, grapes and other gifts of nature went into the making.
What's more, the artist created all this splendour in just five hours!
For most people, that's the time needed to go grocery shopping, cook lunch, eat lunch and wash the dishes. But in that time Patnaik managed to create an entire goddess! 😄
Durga is one of the most revered goddesses of Hinduism, symbolising strength, protection and the victory of good over evil. So the artist's work is not just an unusual composition, but also a piece with deep cultural meaning.
And yet the combination of such a serious image with utterly everyday products looks surprisingly original.
Imagine arriving at the beach and finding a genuine work of art there, one that took so many vegetables it would be enough for a small restaurant!
The most important thing is not to let too-hungry tourists near the sculpture. Otherwise, in an hour all that will be left of the goddess is sand! 😂
Perhaps we now have a new artistic style — vegetable realism with fruity elements.
And the main advantage over classical sculpture: if the critics don't like the creation, you can make dinner from some of the materials! 🥕🍌
According to Indian media reports, the artist was assisted by students from his Sand Art Institute. The composition itself was dedicated to the Durga Puja festival.
