Iconos del Diseño 2026: how Latin American design turns context into a global language-1

The Iconos del Diseño 2026 Gala at Estadio Banorte took place in the rain, amid a dance by Greta Elizondo and the sculptural awards of Andrés Anza. That evening, Architectural Digest México y Latinoamérica presented awards not merely for beautiful forms, but for projects that rethink the relationship between architecture and place, climate and community.

Among the laureates is Caja de Música in Bogotá, where concrete simultaneously solves acoustics, holds back the slope and fits into the historic landscape. Casa Xingu in Brazil literally “reads” the uneven terrain, turning the house into an extension of the mountain. MIRA Earth Studios in Mexico uses local earth for its walls, while green roofs return to nature what construction took away. These works show that the constraints of landscape and climate become not an obstacle but a source of expressiveness.

The honorary award went to the Mexican architect Augusto Quijano. His buildings in Yucatán have for decades demonstrated how geometry and light can work with tropical heat and wind rather than against them. The first laureate of the Salón de la Excelencia — the studio MYT+GLVDK — was recognized for its long-standing ability to set standards in technique and visual storytelling.

The award itself — Anza’s organic sculpture — does not fix a completed success but hints at continuation: a spiral that “opens up” and invites further interpretation. It is a precise gesture for a region where design rarely copies Western models but rather reworks local traditions into a contemporary language.

The event at the former Estadio Azteca underscores the scale: design in Latin America is no longer a periphery but one of the leading voices of the global discipline. When projects simultaneously solve engineering problems, preserve the memory of a place and create new sensations, they cease to be “regional” and become universal examples of how form is born from context.

In 2026, Iconos del Diseño once again confirmed: the future of design lies not in universal recipes but in the ability to listen to the land, the climate and the people for whom you build.
