A new study from Stanford and the University of Cambridge challenges the notion that mental decline begins in your thirties. Researchers tracked the literacy and numeracy skills of thousands of German adults over several years, finding that these skills continue to improve into the early forties. Literacy tends to remain stable, while numeracy may decline slightly, but regular use of these skills can maintain or even improve them into the fifties. This research suggests that cognitive engagement plays a more significant role than age alone in determining when cognitive skills peak. Keeping the brain active through reading, problem-solving, and other mentally stimulating activities can delay or prevent cognitive decline. The study highlights the importance of continuous learning and mental engagement throughout life.
