Trinidad Students Plant Vetiver Grass and Trees to Combat Climate Change on International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

On November 22, 2024, students from Vessigny Secondary School in coastal south Trinidad participated in a planting initiative, contributing 42 feet of vetiver grass and 30 fruit trees to their school compound. This effort aims to enhance climate resilience in a region vulnerable to environmental challenges.

The vetiver plant, known for its long, sturdy roots, is recognized for its effectiveness in mitigating the impacts of climate change, particularly in small island developing states. It is capable of stabilizing slopes, controlling erosion, and rehabilitating contaminated soil, making it a valuable asset for communities facing extreme weather events.

This initiative was organized in collaboration with the environmental NGO IAMovement and the sustainability-focused Advisors Next Door, under the Inspire2Achieve (I2A) program by the National Gas Company (NGC). The program emphasizes sustainable practices and community engagement, particularly among youth, to address climate-related issues.

Students received training on proper planting techniques, which is crucial for rural communities that are at high risk for landslides and other climate-related disasters. The event coincided with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, which this year focused on empowering the next generation for a resilient future.

NGC's sustainability initiatives reflect a commitment to balancing energy production with environmental stewardship. The company aims to integrate sustainability into its operations, as highlighted in its 2022 Sustainability Report.

Other energy companies in Trinidad and Tobago are also prioritizing environmental education as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts. The Atlantic LNG company, for instance, has partnered with the Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project to educate primary school children about environmental conservation.

Despite these initiatives, concerns remain regarding the adequacy of current efforts to address the climate crisis. Experts emphasize the need for more substantial actions to halt the extraction of finite resources and mitigate the impending environmental challenges.
