China Threatens Retaliatory Trade Measures Against Taiwan Amidst Ongoing Dispute

On October 13, 2024, China's Ministry of Commerce announced plans to consider further economic measures against Taiwan following the conclusion of a trade barrier investigation. The Taiwan Affairs Office expressed strong support for these measures. In response, Taiwan's Economic and Trade Negotiation Office expressed regret and a strong protest, urging China to cease its economic coercion and political manipulation.

The Economic and Trade Negotiation Office emphasized that China did not follow World Trade Organization (WTO) procedures in conducting the trade barrier investigation, which lacked fairness, transparency, and open communication. Taiwan has repeatedly called for consultations within the WTO framework regarding the trade disputes, seeking a resolution based on relevant regulations.

Officials in Taiwan reiterated their request for China to adopt a responsible approach and to stop irrational political interference in international trade, urging compliance with WTO standards for dispute resolution.
