Colombian President Urges Undocumented Citizens in the U.S. to Return Home Amid Diplomatic Tensions

On January 31, 2025, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for undocumented Colombians in the United States to leave their jobs immediately and return to Colombia. He announced that the Department of Social Prosperity would provide financial assistance to those who enroll in its programs.

This week, Colombian air force planes have brought deportees back to Bogotá, with three flights operated by the Colombian military and one by a U.S. aircraft. This development follows a diplomatic crisis between the two nations over deportation policies.

President Petro had previously blocked the entry of two U.S. planes carrying deportees, citing concerns over their treatment while being transported. This decision escalated tensions, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a 25% tariff on Colombian goods and other travel sanctions.

In a subsequent agreement reached between the two governments, Colombia accepted all terms set by the U.S., including the unconditional acceptance of deported undocumented Colombians. Despite this resolution, diplomatic relations between the countries remain strained.
