Philippines: Civil Society Groups Initiate Impeachment Process Against Vice President Sara Duterte Amid Corruption Allegations

On December 2, 2024, civil society groups in the Philippines launched an impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte, accusing her of corruption amidst an ongoing conflict with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The impeachment complaint was filed by Congressman Perci Cendaña in the House of Representatives.

The allegations against Duterte include involvement in multiple corruption scandals, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and complicity in extrajudicial killings during her tenure as mayor of Davao. Cendaña expressed support for citizens demanding accountability for Duterte's alleged constitutional violations and corruption, framing the impeachment as a first step in a broader campaign against her father and his allies.

Duterte is currently under investigation for allegedly misusing intelligence funds, and her relationship with Marcos Jr. has soured significantly, culminating in her resignation from the government in June. In September, she reportedly issued threats against the president and others if she were to be harmed.

Despite the impeachment proceedings, President Marcos Jr. stated last Friday that he does not support the motion, arguing it would only serve to obstruct Congress without delivering tangible benefits to the Filipino populace.
