Mali Appoints New Prime Minister as Government Reshuffles Ahead of 2025 Elections

On November 21, 2024, the military junta in Mali appointed Division General Abdoulaye Maïga as the new Prime Minister, succeeding civilian leader Choguel Maïga. The announcement was made during a special broadcast by state television ORTM.

Abdoulaye Maïga, who previously served as interim Prime Minister in 2022, is known for his close ties to transitional President General Assimi Goïta. His appointment follows a significant reshuffle within the government, which now comprises 28 members, including seven returning officials.

The new government retains key positions such as Justice, Defense, and Foreign Affairs, while introducing a new ministerial role focused on political reforms and supporting the electoral process. This move signals a push towards organizing presidential elections scheduled for 2025.

Abdoulaye Maïga is a well-educated figure with a background in security, having worked with the African Union and the United Nations. His previous criticisms of French authorities and regional leaders have marked him as a notable political figure in Mali.
