OpenAI has officially launched its AI video-generation model, Sora, which allows users to create high-definition videos from text or image prompts. The model, which debuted on December 9, 2024, is included in existing paid ChatGPT memberships and is available in the U.S. and many countries worldwide, though not yet in Europe, the U.K., or China.

Sora can generate videos of up to 20 seconds in length and offers features such as video editing, remixing existing videos, and the ability to stitch clips together. Users can create videos in various resolutions, including 480p and 1080p, and can explore a community page showcasing videos created by others.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized the importance of Sora in the company's roadmap towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), stating, "We don't want our AIs to just be text." The tool has been in private preview since February, with feedback from artists and testers informing its public release.

However, the launch has raised concerns regarding the potential for misinformation, especially with the rise of AI-generated deepfakes. OpenAI acknowledges these challenges and has implemented safety measures, although the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen.

As the generative AI market grows, Sora positions OpenAI to compete against similar tools from companies like Meta and Google, which are also exploring video generation capabilities.
