Archaeologists have unearthed substantial remains of London's earliest Roman basilica beneath an office building at 85 Gracechurch Street. The discovery, made in 2023 during redevelopment preparations, is considered one of the most significant recent finds in the city. The basilica, constructed around 80 AD, was part of the Roman forum, the capital's social and administrative center. It functioned as a town hall where political and judicial decisions were made. Excavations revealed sections of the basilica, including what is believed to be the tribunal, where officials adjudicated important matters. The structure was replaced by a larger forum around AD 100. Developers Hertshten Properties are revising plans to incorporate a public exhibition space showcasing the remains. The discovery offers insights into the origins and development of Roman London.
