Upcoming Astronomical Events in 2025

Edited by: Irena I

As 2025 approaches, several noteworthy astronomical events are set to captivate skywatchers across the United States.

January-February: Planet Parade

Four planets—Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars—will be visible in the evening sky throughout January and February. Venus and Saturn will be located in the southwestern sky, while Jupiter and Mars will appear toward the southeast. Additionally, Uranus and Neptune will be present but only visible through telescopes.

In late February, Mercury will join this planetary alignment, becoming visible in the early evening sky before disappearing by mid-March.

January 13: Lunar Occultation of Mars

On January 13, a full moon will occult Mars, blocking its light for approximately one hour. This event will be observable from most parts of the United States, with specific timings varying by location.

March 13-14: Total Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse will occur on the night of March 13-14. The partial eclipse begins at 1:09 AM EDT, with the moon entering totality from 2:26 AM to 3:31 AM, turning a reddish hue. This will be the only total lunar eclipse visible from the U.S. in 2025.

April/October: Meteor Showers

The Lyrid Meteor Shower will peak on April 22-23, followed by the Orionid Meteor Shower on October 21-22. The latter will benefit from a nearly invisible moon, allowing for optimal viewing conditions.

November 5: Supermoon

The largest full moon of 2025, known as a supermoon, will occur on November 5, appearing significantly larger and brighter in the night sky.

Skywatchers are encouraged to take advantage of these celestial phenomena throughout the year.
