Severe Snowfall Warning in Ireland, Nov 20, 2024

A Status Orange snow and ice warning has been issued for five counties in Ireland, effective from midnight on Thursday until noon. The counties affected include Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford.

Forecasts indicate significant snowfall, leading to hazardous travel conditions and disruptions to public transport. A Status Yellow warning for snow and ice is also in effect for a broader area, including all of Munster and several other counties.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as -4 degrees Celsius, with widespread frost and icy conditions. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution while traveling, particularly on untreated roads.

In addition, concerns have been raised regarding the welfare of vulnerable populations during the cold snap. Elderly support groups are advising community members to check on those in need, while charities are ensuring that homeless individuals have access to emergency shelters.

The Road Safety Authority has warned that driving conditions will be particularly challenging due to ice and snow accumulation, especially on secondary roads. Motorists are advised to undertake only necessary journeys and to prepare their vehicles for winter conditions.
