Tropical Storm Man-yi Threatens Philippines, November 14, 2024

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued warnings for Southern Luzon, Central Luzon, and Eastern Visayas regarding significant rainfall expected in the coming days due to Tropical Storm Man-yi, which will be named Pepito upon entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

As of Thursday morning, November 14, Man-yi was located 1,375 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and was moving west southwest at 25 kilometers per hour. Its trajectory is influenced by a high-pressure area south of Japan.

The storm intensified on Thursday morning, with maximum sustained winds increasing from 75 km/h to 85 km/h, and gustiness rising from 90 km/h to 105 km/h. PAGASA anticipates that Man-yi may strengthen into a severe tropical storm before entering PAR and could reach typhoon status by Friday morning, November 15.

There is a possibility of rapid intensification, with forecasts suggesting Man-yi could reach super typhoon classification before making landfall. The storm is projected to impact the eastern coast of Southern Luzon at peak intensity on Saturday, November 16, or Sunday, November 17. Central Luzon and Eastern Visayas are also potential landfall areas, as the storm's path may vary within the forecast confidence cone.

PAGASA has indicated that most areas in Luzon and Eastern Visayas are at risk for heavy rain, severe winds, and potential storm surges, which could result in considerable impacts. The agency's rainfall outlook suggests hazardous sea conditions may arise in the eastern seaboard of the Philippines starting late Friday or Saturday.

Residents are advised to monitor updates closely as more detailed forecasts will be provided once Man-yi enters PAR.
