Severe Windstorm Disrupts BC Power, Nov 5, 2024

A significant windstorm impacted British Columbia on November 5, 2024, affecting nearly 290,000 customers. As of Tuesday morning, B.C. Hydro reported that power had been restored to 95% of those affected, yet over 9,000 customers remained without electricity, particularly in the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island regions.

Utility spokesperson Mora Scott indicated that restoration efforts are complicated by extensive damage, including downed power lines and poles caused by toppled trees. Crews have been working diligently to clear debris and replace damaged infrastructure.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District has activated an emergency operations center to assist local agencies and support restoration efforts. Scott noted that the ongoing multi-year drought has led to an increase in tree damage, making them more susceptible to wind-related incidents.

Wind warnings had been issued by Environment Canada for the affected areas, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h. Residents are advised to report downed power lines to emergency services and maintain a safe distance.
