In Chalampé, Haut-Rhin, a significant environmental initiative is underway as 16,000 trees will be planted in the coming weeks near the Alsachimie industrial site. This ambitious project aims to recreate a typical Rhine floodplain forest, enhancing biodiversity in the region.

The area, currently cleared and situated between the Muhlbach stream and a railway, will transform into a lush habitat over the next few years. The initiative began in 2019 when Alsachimie sought permission to clear land for factory expansion, which was granted under the condition of environmental compensation.

Instead of simply contributing financially to the Biodiversity Fund, Alsachimie opted to undertake this reforestation project, collaborating with various stakeholders, including Alsace Nature. The project involves creating a forest with a small stream, designed to mimic the natural flood cycles of the Rhine, which are vital for local biodiversity.

Six hectares will be planted with trees, primarily oaks, along with floodplain species such as ashes, alders, and willows near the watercourse. Additionally, two hectares of wetland will feature aquatic vegetation typical of Rhine habitats.

As the area develops, it will provide a habitat for diverse wildlife, including fish, amphibians, insects, and migratory birds. The planting of trees and aquatic plants is set to start in mid-February and conclude by early spring, with the area expected to flourish over the next decade.

This project is not only a significant step towards improving local biodiversity but also a model of collaboration among various partners, showcasing the potential for industrial sites to contribute positively to the environment.
